Castello del Trebbio: Chianti Rufina Sangiovese from a Castle of Conspiracies

June 11, 2026Swirl Wine Team0 comments

Just a short drive from Florence, a castle in the hills of Chianti Rufina is making some of Tuscany's most forward-thinking wine today. Castello del Trebbio takes its name from a fortress built in 1194, and every glass carries more than 800 years of history.

The castle where the Medici plot was hatched

The castle once belonged to the Pazzi family. In 1478, the "Pazzi Conspiracy" to assassinate Lorenzo the Magnificent (the Medici) is said to have been planned in a room of this very Trebbio castle. After the plot failed, the Pazzi lost the castle; it slept for centuries before passing to the current owners in 1968 and being reborn as a home for wine and agriturismo.

A place called Chianti Rufina

Chianti Rufina is one of the highest, coolest sub-zones of Chianti. Clay-rich soils and more than 900mm of annual rain give Sangiovese firm structure and elegant acidity, producing age-worthy, refined reds. Owner Stefano Casadei has introduced amphora fermentation and his own organic protocol, "Biointegrale," constantly pushing the traditional vineyards toward the future.

The Tre Bicchieri benchmark: Lastricato

Nothing tells the story better than "Lastricato," the Chianti Rufina Riserva that earned Gambero Rosso's top Tre Bicchieri rating. (Note: the 2017 vintage is currently sold out, please contact us about restock.) To enjoy the estate now, reach for "De Pazzi," Sangiovese layered with Syrah and Merlot and aged in terracotta.

Lastricato Chianti Rufina Riserva is currently sold out. Please get in touch about restock.
