The most reliable way to send wine to Japan from abroad is to order from a wine shop inside Japan and have it delivered straight to the recipient's address. No international shipping, no customs: the wine leaves a warehouse in Japan, gift-boxed and carrying your message card.

A common misconception: "I have to ship it from my own country"
When you want to send wine from abroad, the first idea is usually to post it internationally. In practice, shipping alcohol across borders is harder than it looks.
- The recipient may be asked to pay taxes. Alcohol is subject to customs duty, liquor tax and consumption tax, and the parcel can arrive with a bill for the person you meant to thank. Not the gift you had in mind.
- Carriers may refuse alcohol. Depending on the country and the courier, international shipments of alcohol are often not accepted.
- Breakage and heat. On a long journey bottles can break, and in warm months the wine can be damaged.
Ordering from a shop inside Japan removes all of this. What arrives is not a tax bill but a carefully wrapped bottle and your words.
Japan's gift calendar: when to give, and under what name
Japan has a strong custom of giving at the turning points of the year and of life. Matching the occasion (the inscription on the gift) and the timing makes a real difference.

Gift etiquette that is appreciated in Japan
A gift from someone overseas is memorable on its own. Add a small nod to Japanese etiquette and it becomes the bottle that says "they really get it".
If you add a noshi, give the inscription and your name
For formal gifts such as oseibo or congratulations, a noshi paper wrapper is customary. Specify the inscription (御歳暮, 御礼 and so on) and the sender's name. For a casual gift to a friend, no noshi is needed.
Send one, two or three bottles
In Japan the number 4 can evoke "death" and 9 "suffering", so these quantities are sometimes avoided for gifts. With wine, one, two or three bottles are the safe choice.
For an office, include the company and department
When sending to a business partner's office, enter the company name, department and person's name exactly. A weekday daytime slot makes sure someone is there to receive it. For a home address, an evening slot is often more convenient.
If the recipient is in mourning, skip onenga
When someone is in mourning (mochu), New Year congratulations such as onenga are avoided. Oseibo is an expression of thanks, so it is still appropriate. If in doubt, keep the wrapping understated.
Keep the message card short and warm

Is there a common mistake to avoid?
Timing is the big one. Oseibo and congratulations depend on the moment, so order with time to spare rather than at the last minute. The other is leaving out the department or the person's name on an office delivery. Enter the address precisely so it reaches the right hands.
