Italy's most authoritative independent wine guide, Gambero Rosso, has announced its 2027 Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) selections, and the results reveal a meaningful shift in Puglia's wine scene. The region long celebrated for its powerful, robust reds is evolving, with elegance and freshness now leading the way.
Tre Bicchieri is Gambero Rosso's highest annual accolade, and the coveted three-glasses rating is a key benchmark for wine professionals worldwide. In the 2027 Puglia category, lighter, fresher red wine styles are earning top marks alongside the traditional heavy-bodied Primitivo and Negroamaro expressions. The guide's editorial notes highlight that "consumer preferences have shifted strongly toward freshness and white wines, and southern Italian producers are adapting quickly."
Positioned at the heel of the Italian boot, Puglia has long shaped its identity around the Mediterranean sun and clay-rich soils that produce wine of extraordinary depth. Once primarily known for bulk production, the region's quality revolution over recent decades has earned it international recognition, and this year's Tre Bicchieri results suggest the next chapter has begun.
The SWIRL Perspective
Commenting on these results, SWIRL's Federico Fanelli shares his view: "The Puglia trend is clear. Red wines are getting lighter as consumer taste has strongly moved toward freshness and white wines. At SWIRL, we have been ahead of this curve. Our reds are loved by our customers for their elegance and balance."
To experience modern Puglia at its best, start with Doppio Passo Primitivo, Japan's first and exclusive import from SWIRL, where power and freshness come together in perfect harmony.
