Tenuta San Guido / Sassicaia 2022
Winery: Tenuta San Guido
Dry, full-bodied. Sassicaia is the original "Super Tuscan", born on the gravelly, sea facing hills of Bolgheri in Tuscany. A Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend with Cabernet Franc, it has been compared to the Bordeaux first growths since its first release in 1968, and in 1994 it earned Italy's only single estate DOC, Bolgheri Sassicaia.
The latest 2022 vintage comes from a hot, dry year, yet Bolgheri's cooling sea breeze preserved an excellent balance of acidity and freshness. With careful adjustments to the Cabernet Franc proportion and to vinification, and around 24 months in French oak barriques, it shows elegance, saline minerality and the poise of Mediterranean herbs rather than sheer power, with the structure to age for decades.
Vivino 4.4★ / 5 (2022 vintage, 370+ reviews; Sassicaia overall holds 4.6★ across more than 15,000 ratings).
It drinks beautifully with a few years of age, ideal both as a bottle to cellar and as a special gift for an anniversary or celebration. Pair with grilled beef, roast beef, game or aged cheese. Serve at 16 to 18°C and decant while young.
